Possible Selves 1

When I see myself in the future, I have too many dreams to see one distinct path. The largest one regarding Japanese, though must be me having enough of an understanding to feel confident in a professional (medical) setting. I want to be able to make the people around me as comfortable as possible and show that I care. I have thought about spending time in Japan, and while I believe I would enjoy it, I can’t see myself spending a large amount of time there. I know that can easily change though.

I am interested in pursuing the JET program even though that is far off, and I want to be as proficient in the language as possible. Besides throwing myself into JLC4, if I am allowed, I plan to continue to take Japanese until I am no longer able. I am willing to attempt to learn on my own, but I feel that the structure and pressure of a classroom setting is something that I need at my current level. I understand that I will never be ‘perfect’ but I want to be able to converse with others and be able to show my true self instead of the shell of myself I can currently portray. At the risk of being redundant, I really want to flourish as a speaker and challenge myself to be the best I can be.

I simply want to be me, just in Japanese.

  1. You are doing great. We are going to be working on your cultural identity and developing our translanguagin skills. So the person you are today, will not be the person you are at the end of this course. Since you have a strong desire to go into the medical field, I recommend starting a list of anatomy. common body terms first and gradually get more indepth. Perhaps general body parts and the kanji and words associate with them. A brainweb style might work best for seeing those connections. There are higher levels of Japanese in Kansas City through JCCC. I'm happy to intrduce you to that instructor later this semester. Best thing for preparing to learn whether in a classroom or alone, is to know your goals. Make them really clear and then dig in. You can do it!

    1. I would appreciate more information on continuing, and as far as the Kanji and word association for medicine, I bought the book we discussed and will be working through it in my free time between classes and other appointments!

    2. JCCC is offering an intermediate course that meets in the evenings. The instructor that I recommend is Kotoko Nakata Grass. She is a wonderful teacher. We have shared many students between our courses and you'll have the support of both of us for your future langauge plans.
